Botox is every where you turn – removing forehead lines, relaxing frown lines, diminishing migraines, and eliminating excessive underarm sweat. This past week, the Food and Drug Administration officially approved Botox Cosmetic for an additional use, the treatment of severe lateral canthal lines – more commonly known as Crow’s Feet. As the number one non-surgical treatment for both men and women, Botox has again and again proven itself to be a powerful tool in the fight against aging.
Allergan, the maker of Botox Cosmetic, is proud of this month’s milestone; as the product is the only injectable that has been endorsed by the FDA to treat both Crow’s Feet and Frown Lines. While Botox Cosmetic has been used ‘off label’ to smooth lines around the corner of the eyes for years, the sanction by the Food and Drug Administration is a landmark stamp of approval for the injectable toxin.
To obtain the FDA’s stamp of approval, the safety and efficiency of Botox Cosmetic was put to the test through two clinical trials. The Crow’s Feet study utilized more than 1,350 subjects, 833 of them receiving Botox while 517 were given a placebo. Compared with the control group, Botox clearly showed itself effective in the treatment of moderate to severe lateral canthal lines.
Botox Cosmetic (Botulinum Toxin Type A) is a prescription medication, administered through tiny injections, used to temporarily relax the muscles in a targeted area. By briefly blocking the nerve impulses, muscle movement is reduced; therefore those wrinkles and fine lines caused by the muscle contraction are eliminated. Injections take just minutes to complete and require no down time. Full results can be seen in two to three weeks, and last anywhere from three to four months.
