Just considering nonsurgical facial rejuvenation can be overwhelming. Today, the news is full of horror stories, reporting horrific incidents of fake Botox and silicone received from home parties, unlicensed day spas, and careless doctor’s offices. Dr. Vitenas would like you to remember these situations are not the norm; everyday, many people get excellent results from injectibles. However, do you know how to protect yourself from the shady providers and scam artists? It is time to find out who can legally provide injectibles.
Injections and the Law:
Generally speaking, in the United States, the law states that licensed physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses are legally allowed to provide Botox Cosmetic and dermal fillers. Some states allow aestheticians to administer injectibles, while others, such as California, do not.
Botox Cosmetic and Dermal Filler Injections in Texas:
Texas law states that non-physicians are allowed to administer injectibles, as long as they are working under a licensed doctor’s supervision. Rules issued by the Texas Medical Board in 2013 require advanced patient screening, injections to be supervised by a licensed medical professional, written protocols to be on hand, and detailed record keeping. The person administering the injections must receive hands on training. These rules allow anyone to administer Botox Cosmetic or dermal fillers, and mean the physician does not have to work on the premises when the injections are performed.
Why be concerned about who provides the injectibles?
In states such as Texas, where anyone is legally allowed to administer Botox Cosmetic, even under a licensed physician’s care, there are gaps in safety. Cosmetic professionals, like aestheticians, are well-trained in facial anatomy and how to care for the skin, however the scope of their education stops here. Injectibles, like Juvederm and Restylane, are placed below the skin, into deep layers of tissue. As with Botox Cosmetic, some injections are even placed in the muscle. A provider who does not have in-depth medical training in physiology means an increased risk for side effects, poor results, and even permanent problems from injectibles.
How to find the best Botox Cosmetic or Dermal Filler provider:
- Understand the laws governing injectibles in your state
- Select a board certified plastic surgeon
- Look for a provider that is reputable and respected, with multiple positive patient reviews
- Ask for the provider’s qualifications, about their education, and how much experience they have
- Look at their before/after photos: make sure there are lots of pictures with excellent results
- Check with the state medical board, to know if there have been complaints against the provider.
