Any seasoned Botox Cosmetic user will probably tell you that they started their wrinkle-free journey uninformed and overconfident. However, by heeding their words of wisdom, you should not have to learn the same lessons the hard way. Here is a list of 10 things I wish someone had told me before my first injection.
1. Botox Cosmetic works on dynamic wrinkles:
Dynamic wrinkles are the result of repetitive muscle movement; therefore Botox Cosmetic is fantastic for Crow’s Feet, Frown Lines and Forehead Lines. Optimal rejuvenation may require the addition of other treatments, such as dermal fillers to replace lost facial volume.
2. Be prepared to pay for the best:
While you may feel like pinching pennies, especially when it comes to elective treatments like Botox Cosmetic, don’t be tempted. Not only will you be throwing good money down the drain, poorly applied Botox can cause problems such as drooping eyelids or permanent nerve damage.
3. Good results are your responsibility:
It is your job to pick an experienced Botox Cosmetic provider, and help them understand exactly what you want. Be clear what areas you would like addressed – even better, bring a photo of the ‘ideal’ complexion.
4. Get your Botox ahead of schedule:
The results from Botox Cosmetic are not immediate. It actually takes about two weeks to three weeks for the full benefits to show. Since the results will last up to three months, get your treatment out of the way early.
5. Know the real cost:
Some offices charge for Botox Cosmetic by the unit, while others bill by the area. Paying by unit is the most precise. There is a standard range that each area may need (for example Forehead Lines normally require between 10 and 30 units), so being charged by the area may mean paying for more Botox than you actually use.
6. How much is enough:
With Botox, a little goes a long way! More of the product does not equal a better outcome; it can just result in a higher risk for problems. The required amount of Botox Cosmetic will depend on the specific area and the extent of correction required.
7. Stay up after your treatment:
For the first 3-4 hours after a Botox Cosmetic treatment, stay in an upright position. This will prevent the toxin from migrating (traveling) to the surrounding areas. Go back to work, eat dinner, or watch a movie – just do not go home and nap.
8. Avoid fish oil and ibuprofen before Botox:
Ibuprofen and fish oils can contribute to swelling and bruising after injections. Therefore it should be avoided for two weeks before a Botox Cosmetic treatment. Ask your doctor or aesthetician when making your Botox appointment if there is anything else that could interact with your injections.
9. Botox accumulates:
While your Crow’s Feet may initially require 5 units of Botox, after several treatments, the area may only require 2 or 3 units. Over time, Botulinum Toxin will build up in the muscles. That’s a good thing; but if you change providers, be sure to let them know your Botox history, so there is no overdoing it.
10. Even with the best doctor, side effects can occur:
It doesn’t matter if you are seeing the most elite cosmetic surgeon, or if you have a long history of fabulous Botox results, side effects CAN happen. While problems are rare, Botox Cosmetic does hold the chance for bruising, bleeding, and unexpected drooping.
